Obesity and Related Chronic Diseases

The new obesity researches revise the weight loss assumptions of the world. A new research by The Lancet has revealed that dietician and doctors have misled assumptions regarding the weight loss methods. There is over emphasis importance on how weight loss is related to energy intake. Cutting 500 calories a day allows you to loose one pound a week and 50 pounds loss takes a year or two, but not within months.

A reduction of 2MJ per day allows the person to reduce 1.1 pound weight in one week. This rule for the weight loss does not adapt well with the psychological adaptation those results in the loss of body weight. The individuals as well as the population have drastically overestimated expectations for weight loss.

The response of a body weight to the change of energy is slow. Adults having adiposity have larger expected weight loss for the same amount of energy intake. For reaching a stable rate, the weight will take a longer time as those with less initial body fat.

The need was to establish an appropriate rule of thumb. It is like every change of energy intake of 100KJ per day leads to change in the body weight of 1kg. Half of the weight change is achieved in one year and the remaining 95% in about three years.

There is a need of accurate mathematical models of human metabolism, which affects the quantitative intervention of individual and population levels. Obesity is a chronic condition occurred due to the excessive amount of body fat. There is a limit of body fats required for shock absorption, heat insulation and other function, but it is about 25-30% in women and 18-23% in men. Men above 25% and women above 30% fat are considered as fat.

Body mass index is also used for defining the obesity. It is a dilemma because of its direct association with cardiovascular diseases. For all those having a BMI of more than 40, the life expectancy is reduced significantly. Obesity increases the risk of insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, heart attack, cancer, gall stones and sleep apnea.
